Vitreous glass painting on glass. Glass painting is the application of Stainers Colors, silver stains and enamels made of metal oxides and ground glass pigment mixed with different media applied and fired onto glass to illustrate images and design. Glass painting adds wonderful dimension to leaded and copper foiled works in glass.

During this session you will see slides of different applications for glass painting and watch a demonstration of mixing paints and painting on glass. We will discuss the painting process and view examples of the multilayering process. We will discuss equipment, tools, paints, types of glass used, brushes, and kilns used in this age-old art. Participants will have hands on experience with the glass paint mixing and applications. We will learn about firing the glass and will fire your experiments.

PHOTO EMULSION SILKSCREEN $285 for 2 days or $350 for 3 days--no kit

with Vitreous Glass Paint

2 or 3 Day Class 8 students max

Fri. February 26th - Sun. February 28th, 2010 10:00 am - 4:30 pm

Imagine your photographic or high contrast images adhered to glass using two time-tested techniques; Photo silkscreen and vitreous glass paints.

Students learn to manipulate the image they wish to print with the computer so that it is appropriate for printing onto glass. Images should be high contrast. We will discuss and practice the techniques involved and how to coat the silkscreen with a photosensitive emulsion. We will print images onto transparencies, before curing (or burning) onto the screen. After exposing the photosensitive emulsion to UV light, the screens are rinsed and dried, and the images are silk screened onto glass with vitreous glass paints. The final stage is a kiln fire to permanently affix the paint. We will work with sizes 8" x 8" or smaller. As many smaller positives may be exposed as will fit the screen--for example, 5"x7", 6"x4", etc.

If you would like to work on your project after the class, the studio will be open from 7:00-10:00p.m. This will be offered Friday and Saturday night only.

Many restaurants are within walking distance of the studio. Lunch will be from 12:30 - 1:30 p.m, otherwise lunch can be provided for $7.00 per day, which allows extra studio time. Please let us know if you have any dietary concerns.

Your full payment secures your place in the class, first come first served.

4 Day Class 6 students max

June 21st through 25th, 2008 Thu-Mon GAEA Available

Basic glass painting kit, mandatory. Cost: $150

1st night 6:30 pm - 9:00 pm

All other days 10:00 am through 4 pm

We will discuss design ideas and content of class. Please bring a drawing of the design you will paint. It will need to be the size of glass, 9" x 9"square. This class is to help you create the design of your choice. You will learn the process of tracing, matting for contour, and shading in this weekend's session. We will discuss the line considerations for tracing your design onto the glass on the first day. Each day you will fire your work. Types of kilns and how to use the kiln for firing glass paints will be discussed, and you will use a digital controller for kiln firing.

On the 3rd and 4th days we will add color to the designs. We will only have enough time to add 2-3 colors to the piece of work in the remaining 2 days, so design for this concept.

As glass painting is a multi layering process and labor intensive you may not finish your piece in this five day period. What you will learn from this class will allow you to finish on your own. We will learn firing schedule, equipment and tools and types of glass best used for glass painting. Glass and paint will be supplied for the class.
